When I was diagnosed I had many questions. I was lucky and knew a couple people that went through what I was about to go through. They were and still are very helpful to me. I would like to also be that support person that can be contacted to answer questions.

As a retired sports physical therapist and athletic trainer, I was working on the sidelines at local high school football game on a beautiful fall night in central Illinois. After enjoying a diet soda prior to the game, I needed to use the restroom at halftime. The only problem is that when I got there, I could not urinate. This began a whirlwind of diagnostic tests and treatments that ultimately led to my diagnosis of prostate cancer early the next spring. I was totally flabbergasted to learn of my condition as I was only 44 years old at the time and did not have a family history of prostate cancer. After a radical prostatectomy (removal of my prostate) in 2002 I am very happy to report that I have no active signs of cancer 23 years later. Although diagnosis and treatment have come a long way since 2002, some things have remained the same. Men continue to be reluctant to discuss prostate cancer and still lack the education to advocate for their prostate health. I am not a medical physician; however, I am more than willing to confidentially discuss your prostate concerns. I believe that my firsthand experience with hormone therapy, surgery, radiation, and rehabilitation may help you answer some questions you may have.

Having undergone a radical prostatectomy in 2009, I feel compelled to shine a light on the importance of prostate cancer awareness. This journey was a turning point in my life, an experience that brought to the forefront the significance of early detection and open dialogue surrounding this disease. Prostate cancer is a silent foe, often lurking unnoticed until it reaches an advanced stage. My hope is that by sharing my story, I can encourage men to prioritize regular screenings, engage in candid conversations about their health, and empower themselves with knowledge. Together, we can dispel the stigma, raise awareness, and ultimately, save lives.
